L'été

Ahh the advent of summer. Memorial Day with its opening of public beaches saw New York's population dwindle as people fled the island to the Hamptons - well, at least in my neighborhood that's probably where people went. There is this fantastic gelato store that I've been kinda visiting daily, and this weekend, where there usually are tons of WASPy moms with "les enfants terrible" in tow, there was merciful calm. I am about to start a house sitting gig down in the village. I'm pretty stoked - washer/dryer in unit, loft with skylights, top floor views of Washington Square Park. Pretty much my dream apartment - except I don't have to pay to live in it this summer. But yeah, for the most part (my 5 readers will testify - thanks by the way for reading!!) I haven't had much to procrastinate about since the beginning of the summer... hence, less trolling around the web resulting in much fewer postings. But I am going to try to be more consistent .... to try to reward those that check in once every two days.

Français

I've spent the last... 12 hours working on my french homework. They weren't kidding when they called it Intensive French - two years of college french in 12 weeks - what was I thinking? Je suis fatigue.

J'ai fini!

I just turned in the last paper for the semester. I would do a jig of joy if it weren't for the fact that I've only gotten 25 hours of sleep in the last 7 days. Je vais au lit!

Tuesday, May 18, 2004

Oh for some sleep....

I think I've slept for only 3 hours in the past three days.... according to this site about sleep deprivation hosted by the Macalester's psych department: "Some of the subtle and most profound effects of sleep deprivation involve some aspect of cognition.  One experimenter distinguished between three types of psychological changes during sleep deprivation. These include psychoneurotic-like, schizophrenic-like, and paranoid-like reactions.  Each of these reactions includes a number of sub-symptoms. Psychoneurotic-like reactions include anxiety (e.g., not being able to sleep again, or fear of being harmed), psychomotor complaints (e.g., headaches, nausea, loss of appetite), and irritation. ...In one experiment, after about 40 hours of sleep deprivation all participants shoed some psychotic symptoms, though the severity of these symptoms varied considerably across participants." Psychotic eh? Well, not only did I finish the second of my three papers, I was able to learn posessive pronouns and conjugate them properly this morning when called upon.... avec ses cousines Isabelle et Chloé so HA!

6.5 hours to go..

At which point I will have needed to finish up this paper, catch some Zs, get ready for school, fight rush hour traffic, and begin sitting through 3 hours of language instruction. Why am I blogging?

Late night testing...

I don't think it's all that accurate, but hey.. it's way to late to care...

The Pool Boy
Random Gentle Sex Dreamer (RGSDm)

Friendly and eager. You are The Pool Boy.
A teen at heart, you anxiously move about your daily tasks, hoping, praying for a good, instant lay. You're carefree, enthusiastic, and rarely discouraged. Love is cool, but it's not for you right now. You know what is? Crotches. You're a fun person in both big and small groups, and your friends trust and love you. Inside you, meanwhile, your lust is only growing. Imagine your beating heart sprouting pubic hair. Exactly. Try shaving that. If you're not scoring enough--which you aren't--you should adopt new strategies. Lower your standards. Be aggressive. Pool Boys are often submissive and hope (desperately) sex will find them. Realize that passiveness will not hook the horny guys you desire. A bolder approach and sheer repetition will.

You are compatible with both:

The Bachelor
Straight-up. Studly. The Bachelor an honest, good-thinking guy, and though he's very sexually active, people don't perceive him as a male-slut or man-whore or guy-dick-putter-inner or whatever.

&

The Playboy
Clean. Smooth. Successful. The Playboy is spontaneous, and his energy is highly contagious. Guys therefore find him fun to be around, and girls find him compelling. He has lots of sex, and he manages it all without seeming cheap or being hurtful. Well done. He probably knows karate, too.

You're exact opposite:

The False Messiah
Deliberate Brutal Love Master
People believe in him, and then he sends them to hell. Behold, the False Messiah.

When it rain, it pours...

And the rats come out to swim. Despite better judgement, I went to an Ani Difranco concert at Carnegie Hall tonight - it was awesome. She ended her set with a dirge - if you've heard it before you'll know that she's got cajones performing it in NYC. Got out of the theater and it started thundering. Made it onto a bus as it started pouring. Haha! I thought. But alas, the bus let out at Lex an 57th and my subway stop was at 60th and Lex. In the three short blocks between the bus stop and the subway entrance I got soaked. Not talking a little bit wet - we're talking wetter than this. I managed to lose my sunglasses (ironic), tried to fish it out of a grimy gutter where I thought I might have dropped it making a 5 foot leap over a river, and gave up when a rat raced across my outreached hands... what was I thinking!?!... they were a gift alas they are gone... At least I was wearing my contacts. When I entered the subway, someone commented: He looks like he just jumped into a lake! Thanks lady. I totally coulda had a photo taken of me and submitted - the world is my shower. Back to work writing on crip queer documentaries.

Words mean things...

Has a post that lists what has been said by conservative pundits about the whole torture thing that happened at Abu Ghraib. Including a "conservative christian viewpoint" wherein "Bush apologizing is like FDR apologizing to Hitler." This self identified christian also writes "I said it loudly and plainly and I'll say it as often as I need to: If humiliation AND torture will break these terrorists and make them give up their higher ups and other vermin who like to plant roadside bombs to kill Americans, then do it. We're going to politically correct ourselves into another September 11, and God help us if someone we love gets killed the next time....And let me be clear about my premise. The fact that military folks higher up in the chain of command may have ordered the "torture" doesn't change my argument at all. I still support it to extract information from an enemy of war."

Uhhh.

What's christian about this sentiment? nothing. But don't think appealing the whole Christian agape and forgiveness thing (i.e. calling them hypocrites) would at all work (c.f. this exegesis on turning the other cheek or self-defense for christians).

Personally, I think the humiliation AND torture (i.e. the causing of suffering to further one's own agenda) in the form of US foreign state policy was the originating cause of 9/11...I don't think more of it will really help much... but don't take it on my account, check out this flash movie hosted at jihadunspun.com, it sends chills down my spine.*

You should also check out the Village Voice piece (via Pylduck) about the gendered element of this whole scandal thing. Why are we obsessed with the chick who flashed two thumbs up in the torture pictures and not the many many more men who are also featured in the pictures?

*I have been told that many islamic activists believe that jihadunspun is actually a CIA site that monitors dissenters. How likely this is... I don't know. But, I read Clandestine Radio Broadcasting: a study of revolutionary and counterrevolutionary electronic communication earlier this semester to get a sense of what goes on in non-commercial applications of radio technology. The authors write in a section about CIA operations involving the spread of misinformation through the use of clandestine radio broadcasts: "This was not the first time that information fabricated by the CIA found its way into the U.S. Press. [ed. referring to CIA broadcasts during the Iranian revolution that were picked up by the New York Times and the Cleveland Press] During the Cultural Revolution in China, the CIA operated clandestine radio stations on Taiwan that claimed to broadcast from within the People's Republic of China. The intent of the stations and other covert propaganda was to increase turmoil within China, which at the time was perceived as an enemy of the United States. The clandestine stations broadcast criticism of the Red Guards and their radical supporters in the government, hoping to rekindle the extreme violence that had been observed in the Cultural Revolution a year earlier. This covert CIA operation was extremely successful in concealing its true identity. Not only did many mainlanders believe that the broadcasts were of Chinese origin, but so did the U.S. press, academics, State department analysts, and other parts of the U.S. intelligence community, who were never informed that the CIA was behind the operation... Thus over an extended period of time, analysts of developments in China and of Chinese-American relations within the American government have had their perceptions distorted by a lack of knowledge of American covert interference in the affairs of the People's Republic of China."

This just sounds wrong....

Mean girls...

Saw this movie last Wednesday with some friends - while waiting for the final two people to show up, I found some 22 oz. cans of fun on sale at the japanese convenience store across the street from the theater. We purchased multiple cans and made use of my friends' oversized purses. We tried to open cans during the party scenes - audience participation is a good thing.

Yes you are? No you're not!

You're pretty kick back and mellow. you don't hold

One down... two to go...

Turned in the first of three papers yesterday, hopeing to not have to pull any more all nighters this semester. I still have two thirty page papers to write... but tonight, I'm going to take a break and go watch the plastics wreak havoc. Teensploitation can be so much fun.

One feature in the American Museum of Natural History's Public Lecture series is called "Adventures in the Global Kitchen." One pays thirty bucks to listen to a panel that includes a entomologist, a pastry chef, and a "explorer" wax poetic about "exotic" foods. And then you sample. Scorpions with Sugar Snap Peas anyone?

Media Matters for America

Is a new site that tracks and fact checks the conservative media. It is run by David Brock, former conservative pundit turned liberal. I haven't had a lot of time to examine Media Matters yet, but according to their about us page "Media Matters for America is a Web-based, not-for-profit progressive research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media. Conservative misinformation is defined as news or commentary presented in the media that is not accurate, reliable, or credible and that forwards the conservative agenda." Boy, as much as I dig the service, I would never want to work at that non-profit.

Party Scene
Stranger 1: Hi there!
Me: Hi!
Stranger 1: What do you do?
Me: Oh, I read and listen to conservative media all day....
Stranger 1: Oh... well, I need to not talk to you...
(Stranger 1 leaves, Stranger 2 sidles up)
Stranger 2: I couldn't help but overhear you mentioning what you do all day...
Me: Yeah....
Stranger 2: Isn't Andrew Sullivan great!?
Me: (runs away) Ahhhhhh!

On the telephone
Me: ... and that's what I do.
Anthropologist Academic: Haven't you read Susan Harding's book?
Me: ... yeah...
Anthropologist Academic: Don't you remember what happens when you immerse yourself in fundamentalist language??
Me: (starts drafting letter of resignation) !!

Mmmm flesh-eating bacteria.... or omigosh! Obtundation!

In honor of a dermatology appointment tomorrow that I've been awaiting for nearly a month (go go gadget managed care!). Today's disturbing link of the week involves the skin. It also involves extra gross linked images to make up for the several week lapse of this ongoing series. You have been warned. Necrotizing Fasciitis is commonly known as "the flesh-eating" bacteria Good 'ol Merck describes symptoms of the infected site as "usually very painful, and the overlying skin is red, hot, and swollen. With progression, violaceous* discoloration, bullae**, crepitus***, and dermal gangrene may develop. Fever is nearly always present and is typically accompanied by systemic toxicity, including tachycardia***** and altered mental status ranging from confusion to obtundation******. Evidence of intravascular volume depletion, including hypotension, is frequent." Two people have been infected one of whom has died of it in New Brunswick, Canada.... click here or here for utter grossness..

* violaceous: resembling violets in color; bluish purple
** bullae: multiple bulla (a bleb; a vesicle, or an elevation of the cuticle, containing a transparent watery fluid)
*** creptitus: grinding noise or sensation within a joint
**** tachycardia: abnormally rapid heartbeat
***** obtundation:  A dulled or reduced level of alertness or consciousness

Celebrity sighting....

An errand (and decent weather) had me walking around the upper east side this morning. On 92nd and Park I notice this guy wearing a black muscle tee. Who wears muscle tees on the UES? My dar went off and the guy's face looked familiar so I take a closer look and hey hey! It's Devon the Escort whose blog answers the age old question of what do escorts do when they are not escorting? Apparently sippin' cola while contemplating abstract art. But anyhow, didn't work up the nerve to say hello as he was with someone... just imagined that doing so would instantly entail an awkwardpalooza. He is the second "celebrity" I've sighted since moving to NYC, the first being her. Hopefully someday soon I'll get to TA them.
